Allergy or intolerance?
It is estimated that some two million Spaniards are allergic to some foods or suffer from some kind of food intoleranceincreasing by 2 percent the percentage of children affected each year.
According to Dr. Guadalupe Blay, head of the Endocrinology and Nutrition Working Group of the Spanish Society of General and Family Physicians (SEMG), the current trend of eating less vegetables, fruits and legumesand more processed foods, high in fats and refined sugars, has modified bacterial floraaltering the immune system and defenses.
“This has influenced the body’s reaction to allergens, due to the internal imbalance it suffers,” he explains. While with allergy the immediate symptoms, in the intolerance are retarded. Similarly, allergies are positive in skin tests, while intolerances are not.
Other keys to differentiate them are that in allergies there are few foods involved and in intolerances many; and that, in allergies, only traces can trigger the relationship, while in intolerances a quantity of food is needed.
Another of its main differences is that food allergies mainly produce skin and mucosal reactionswhile in intolerances there are reactions in all tissues. Allergies are more frequent in children and intolerances in adults. As for its treatment, an easy diet without the food causing allergies is indicated. In intolerances it is more difficult to configure the diet.
